Celebrating and missing their last baby words
It is particularly galling that I now live with a tween who constantly corrects my speech:
"Uh, no, Mom, adults aren't allowed to say 'whatevs' or 'adorbs'… those are not old people words and it's embarrassing"
...when as a younger child (and yes, princess, you are still a child) I never corrected her totally adorbs verbal miscues that made for the most delightful conversations.
When my daughter was wittle, she'd say:
Mama, peez make me cheem cheez blagel for breffgest!
These days it's more along the lines of:
MOM!!!!
(6:02 a.m., bellowing from her room upstairs)
Can you make me an iced vanilla soy chai, light ice, extra soy; and go easy on the cinnamon cuz it sticks in my braces?!!!!
Baby talk
So it was with tearful joy that I came across several recent articles asking readers to remember and write in the top toddler words they will – or do – miss the most.
When Lisa Belkin, one of my favorite parenting writers of all time, wrote about her favorite toddlerisms, the memories, words and love poured in from readers. I got such a tearful, memory-filled kick out of reading all the delicious ways our babies communicated I thought share a few with you and let you enjoy your own memories as well.
Kids say the darnedest things!
Here are a few of my favorites:
I miss the "flutter-byes" in the garden.
And the little boy who wanted to be in charge of the "be-mote" when watching TV.
Pupcake for cupcake.
At age 8 my son still says "callapitter" instead of caterpillar and I just can't bring myself to correct him.
The day my daughter stops saying "Berlaxing" (others might pronounce it "relaxing")...I will sob my eyes out! It's her last baby word!
I miss the words glubs (gloves) and tingers (fingers).
Aggilator. Lellow. Pine-a-papple. Laylybugs. Pamba bears.
And, of course:
Daddy always came home at "six cootie."
